Patient Privacy Notice

Before submission, contributors must review HIPAA confidentiality guidelines. Patient privacy and confidentiality must be maintained at all times. Seek permission before submitting patient stories, and alter or fictionalize identifiable information whenever possible and appropriate. General Submission Guidelines

Intellectual property rights are retained by the contributor. All submitted work becomes the property of The Capsule and may be reproduced in part or whole at the discretion of editors in future publications either online or in print. Please do not submit previously published work or work that has appeared on a blog. All work must be submitted in Times New Roman, sized 12, with 1 inch margins on a Word document. If you are submitting multimedia, please submit both the multimedia piece and its 200 word caption in a pdf format.

One submission per category will be accepted, except for poetry, for which two pieces may be submitted.

Category-Specific Guidelines

1.  Scholarly Articles

We invite submissions for original scholarly articles that investigate the convergence of healthcare and the humanities with properly cited academic references. These articles may be literary, cultural or media analyses, empirical studies, or literature reviews. All scholarly articles must first be approved through a peer-editing process to ensure factual information. Any quotations or citations should follow APA style formatting. The article must have a minimum of 500 words and a maximum of 1500 words. 

 

2. Nonfiction

We invite submissions for original nonfiction stories offering thought-provoking and insightful exploration of health or medical-related themes, grounded in real-life personal, familial or professional experiences. These narratives can highlight the intersection of medical practice, patient journeys, or the broader human context. A minimum of 300 words is required.

 

3. Fiction 

We invite submissions for original, compelling, and imaginative narratives set within health or medical contexts. Fictional stories should delve into the emotional, ethical, and societal dimensions of health experiences while embracing elements of fiction. A minimum of 300 words is required.

 

4. Poetry 

We invite submissions for original poetry exploring themes of health narratives. Poems may reflect personal experiences, observations, or imaginative explorations within health or medical contexts. A minimum of 10 lines is required.

 

5. Multimedia

We invite submissions for original multimedia including photography and studio art highlighting medical or health contexts. Please include multimedia submissions in a pdf format along with a 200 word caption describing the piece and any necessary context of its production or completion. Other multimedia forms may be allowed; please contact thecapsulejournalusf@gmail.com or thecapsulejournalfsu@gmail.com for further inquiry.
